Document Summary

Slides definitions: common good - what is good for the political community as a whole. Can be tricky to achieve in a community based on clashing values and priorities. This helps maintain order in society and gives people a sense of security. For example, everyone agrees that there should be a reduction in air pollution which would be common good, however the cost of reducing air pollution would affect car owners and factories. Common good, that which benefits society as a whole, in contrast to the private good of individuals and sections of society. In effect, the notion of the common good is a denial that society is and should be composed of atomized individuals living in isolation from one another. Instead, its proponents have asserted that people can and should live their lives as citizens deeply embedded in social relationships.
