It will cover all lectures and related readings since the last mid-term. (lectures 7- on) Sections iv (political culture) to vii (federalism): all associated lectures and readings. Political ideas left-wing, right-wing, centrist/moderate: broader ideological premises believed to lie behind an action, opinion or statement, examples. Right- wing newspaper editorial slamming welfare fraud and calling mandatory workfare. Left- wing -proposals to increase minimum wage, ban the use of replacement workers during strike or lockout, or increase spending on assistance for developing countries. Centrist or moderate positions fall between the right and left wings of political spectrum. These beliefs include basic notions about how society, the economy and politics operate, as well as ideas about how these matters should be arranged. Social conservatives are distinguished by such stands as opposition to abortion and same sex marriage, support for capital punishment and stiffer jail sentences, and rejection of forms of pluralism, which they believe are corrosive of traditional values.
