Attention: the process of focusing on speci c objects while ignoring others, perception system has a limited capacity, visual scanning: Important because only the fovea gives good detail vision. When looking for someone in a crowd, each time you pause on someones face, you are making a xation. When moving your eye from one to another you are making a saccadic eye movement: rapid jerky movement from one xation to the next, we move our eyes about 3 times a second. Overt attention: attention that involves looking directly at the intended object. Covert attention: attention without looking, (kind of like peripheral vision) Stimulus salience: physical properties such as movement, colour, orientation and contrast that make a location conspicuous, when attention due to stimulus silence causes an involuntary shift in attention: Attentional capture: brief noise thats loud off to the side that grabs our attention.
