Document Summary

Motion provides information about objects: motion perceptually organizes all the elements of an image, a scene, etc. and results in a single gure separated from the background. Observers perceive shapes more rapidly and accurately when an object is moving. Ex: figure 8. 3; moving around the horse reveals its true shape. Motion attracts attention: movement plays an important role in animal survival because motion attracts attention. Ex: as you try to nd your friend in a crowd, you realize you have no clue where to look. But when you see a person waving you recognize that it"s your friend. Our attention is drawn to salient objects and motion is a very salient aspect of the environment. Motion helps us understand events in our environment: much of what you observe involves information provided by motion. Motion indicates that something important is happening. Ex: heider and himmel (1944); showed a short lm to subjects and asked them to describe what was happening.
