Paraldehyde very safe and effective, but noxious odour and taste therefore not used. Introduced in 1930s, not used much anymore past 1950s. Long lasting small dose for anxiety, short/ fast acting large dose for sleep. Both types of dependence, no longer used as of 2013. Overdose risk high in germany and japan still brought to north america in 1965. Chlordizepoxide, librium was first in na 1960. Enhance inhibitory effects of gaba on its receptors. Low risk of dependency and overdose unless used with alcohol. Short acting and quickly leaving the body lead to more dependence than long acting and slowly leaving.
