Document Summary

Motivational enhancement therapy attempts to shift the focus away from denial and toward motivation to change; targeting abuser"s degree of motivation to quit substance us could enhance the effectiveness of treatment. Hence ambivalent substance abusers should first receive motivational interviewing, a non confrontational assessment of behaviour and its consequences is completed to determine the abuser"s current state of change. To help someone move from one stage to another through motivational interviewing, you need to know where he or she is in the decision making process (guide client rather than tell them what to do, relapse is expected) Precontemplation stage: individual does not recognize a problem exists. Contemplation stage: individual believes a problem might exist, gives some consideration to possibility of change, but is ambivalent, they must justify to themselves why change in beneficial. Preparation stage: individual decides to change/makes plans to do so. Action stage: individual takes active steps toward change like entering treatment.
