PS262 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Chromatic Adaptation, Opponent Process, Cerebral Achromatopsia
Document Summary
Fall 2017: colour is one of the most obvious and pervasive qualities in our environment, however sometimes we may take it for granted, not fully appreciating colour unless we lose our ability to experience it. I was a painter who became colour blind at the age of 65 after suffering a concussion in an automobile accident. Functions of colour perception: colour serves important signalling functions. Ex: we know a banana is ripe when it has turned yellow, we know to stop when the traf c light turns red: colour helps facilitate perceptual organization. Ex: similar elements become grouped together and objects are segregated from their backgrounds: colour is crucial to survival for various species. Ex: a monkey with good colour vision easily detects red fruit against a green background, but a colour-blind monkey would nd it more dif cult to nd the fruit.
