Document Summary

Pns = connects brain and spinal cord to the rest of body. Somatic nervous system: consists of axons conveying messages from sense organs to cns and from cns to muslces. Another part is autonomic nervous system: controls heart, intestines etc. Spinal cord: communicates with all sense organs and muscles except head. Dorsal root ganglia: clusters of sensory neuron cell bodies outside spinal cord. Medulla (vital reflexes), pons (sleep, arousal), cerebellum (movement, balance, coordination) Contains the 12 cranial nerves that connects muscles of head and organs to brain and originate in nucleus to integrate sensory info and regulate motor output. Roof = tectum, tegmentum = lies under tectum, covers structures. Superior and inferior colliculus: swellings on sides of tectum, visual and auditory sensory processing. Thalamus: pair of structures, processes all sensory info except smell. Hypothalamus: conveys messages to pituitary gland through hormones and nerves, the 4 fs. Pituitary gland: endocrine producing gland, at base of hypothalamus, synthesizes hormones.
