The struggle at the turn of the century. White middle/upper class men feared that declining birth rate among whit women would lead. Women in loveless (victorian marriages) were less disposed to have sex w husbands. > many of the husbands were cheating and having sexual intercourse outside of the marriage. Abortion in mid 19th c was illegal > women began to obtain from sex as an alternative to birth control. Women decided to pursue further education and professions. Chose to start careers or waited until they were older before they married (harder to conceive when older) Fear among politicians that can would be over run by immigrants of lesser genetic > White men feared loss of dominance because immigrants began to take jobs (labour) B/c of this, white women were encouraged and threatened to have more children. Moral duty; reproduce for the well being of the nation. She was a public speaker, writer, satirist and activist.
