• Romanesque- 313- late 1300
• 313 Edict of Milan, Constantine declared religious tolerance
• Christianity was no longer persecuted- the churches were massive
• Constantine built the massive old St. Peters Church in Rome- not the one there today
• Abbot Suger is one of the earliest patrons of gothic art and is credited with popularizing the
style
• Gothic is a very regionalized style- arriving in Germany and Italy much later
• High Romanesque- about 1200
• 768- There is a break with emperor Charlemagne- he is a holy roman emperor that was
coronated by the Pope
• Revived the time of Constantine
