Document Summary
Floods: river flood: condition that exists when the discharge of a river cannot be accomodated within its normal channel . Floodplains themselves are built by sediment deposition (suspended sediment) onto the flat surface during floods: coastal flooding different from river flooding: induced by major changes in sea levels due mostly to hurricanes or tsunamis. Floodplains constructed by river: observed in downstream section of large river basins, large meandering rivers suspended load dominating. Formed through combination of factors: meander migration, deposition of suspended sediment when overbank flow occurs. Some rivers are much more susceptible to flooding than others because of a range of factors. Causes of flooding include: extreme precipitation events (e. g. hurricane hazel in toronto in 1954) Ice jams (impeding natural flow of river, added to sudden intense melting) intense rain on melting snow. Friday, january 26, 2018: local topography and/or river flow direction, quick runoff generation (controlled in part by land use characteristics).
