It was natural for all the miners sons in those days to follow in their fathers footsteps. Boys: rugged, fought, and worked for wages. Girls: not rugged, swooned, and did not work for wages. Women"s place in the community was to grow up to become a house wife. Must demonstrated her ability to maintain a home. This reading intersects hisotircally when growing up in north america because we see the difference in how the boys and girls were raised. Also, these practices will carry on through their lives and years: ragged dick. This reading explains how people of different classes live. The wealthier class dress with their nice suits and have a home to live in. The lower class work everyday and try to bring home as much money as possible.
