They are not interested in belonging somewhere else. They are rejecting assimilation because it is not a possibility for them it require a lot of pain. One hand they do not want long distance ethno-nationalism and on the other hand they do not want asssimaition. What does set tent in canada look like without asssimaition. We meet them in the houses where are places cramed full of suff. The immigrate parents say that the hate the city. Every main character at one point say that they love the city. Different type of relationship is setting up there. They do all types of sharing but not preserving. How might it work differently then what the state lets it be. It looks like a grid it matters because the protagonist go off the grid. They are remapping the city as they are moving through it. Toronto is a colonial city established by the british and they took a grid like pattern.
