- June 1998- left behind everything she owned (home, career, companion, reputation, money)
for a plunge into the low-wage workforce
- Middle class journalist that set out to explore the world that welfare mothers are entering
- First task- find place to live in; could only afford flophouses and trailer homes with no
screens, fans, TV or AC- rent $675/month
- Aim- to experience poverty and find out how it really feels to be a long term low wage
worker
- Work will lift poor women out of poverty while simultaneously inflating their self esteem
and hence their future value in the labor market
- Low wage work is not a solution to poverty, and possibly not even to homelessness
- 30% of the workforce toils for less than $8 an hour
- Finding a job is a matter of being at the right place at the right time and flexible enough to
take whatever is being offered that time
- First job- Hearthside- small profit centre within a hotel chain
For two weeks- worked from 2-10pm for $2.43/hr plus tips
Wages included- $5.15/hr
Management is rude af
Less than nurturing management style-
Job showed no sign of being financially viable
Gail- shares room in a downtown flophouse for $250/week
Was fine until she ran out of estrogen pills, buys migraine pills for $9 until she gets
the pills again
Claude- cook; shares two room apartment with girlfriend and two others
Annette- 22 yr old server, 6 months pregnant, abandoned by bf, lives with mother
Marianne + bf- pay $170/week for a one person trailer
Jack- earns $10/hr (highest out of all employees), lives in his own trailer- pays $400
for a month lot fee
Andy- cook, lives on his dry docked boat

Tina + husband- $60/night for double room at a days inn
Joan- lives in a van, showers in tinas motel, buys clothes from thrift shops
- 2nd job- Jerrys (restaurant)
Tries to manage going to both jobs in a short period of time
Has no time to eat eats fast food
Was drained so quit 1st job
Earned $7.50/hr
- Rents another trailer in the overseas trailer park (crime filled area)
- Gets another job as housekeeping in a hotel (9am- whenever) for $6.10/week
- Juggles both jobs for a bit but then it gets way too hard and the pressure keeps building up
so she quits everything and just walks out
- In one month, she earned about $1040 and spent $517 on food, gas, utilities, phone, etc.
Paid rent, and was left with $22
Didnt buy any clothes except for her uniform
Didnt buy any meds
Wasnt able to eat healthy- relied on burgers and fries and still lost 4 pounds

- Toronto- no shortage of food choice (comfort foods, exotic ingredients, multicultural food)
City with a menu of the world
Home to 43% of all new immigrants to Canada
- Foods once considered luxuries are now staples
- For most supermarket shoppers the origin, growing, and production of food are invisible
and irrelevant
- Food shed captures the food products that flow from local farms surrounding a given urban
area, and routes them into the city to the population that will consume them
- Torontos food shed lies within a 200km radius of the city
South and west- most productive part of our food shed- the mixed agricultural areas of
wellington and Haldimand-north counties, the corn and soybean fields of oxford and
the tender fruit lands of Niagara
North of Toronto- lies in the bulk of the greenbelt (720000 hectare/1.8 mill acres):
strip of land that has been designated off limits to urban development to protect
natural areas and encourage working farmland
East- patchwork quilt of small family run farms in Oshawa, Cobourg, Peterborough
- The growing season- late May to mid October
- Of the more than 125 000 immigrants arriving in Ontario each year, almost half come from
five countries- India, china, Pakistan, Iran, Philippines
- Saturday farmers market- largest wholesale produce distribution centre in Canada
- Consumers want cheap food, fast; want lots of it and want it 24/7
- Placeless food- food that comes from anywhere and everywhere
- Many citizens have nothing to eat
Reasons for urban poverty and hunger are complex but are deeply rooted in our
attitude to food and the way in which grow, market, import and sell it
People who could at least grow vegetables in the past, are now more often dependent
on food banks to feed their children and themselves
Loss of genetic diversity and eventual extinction in seeds and crop stock are
paramount concerns to global food security
- Threats to environmental health result from agricultural pollution, declining soil fertility and
the loss of habitat for other species that co-exist on farmland
- Societal and economic risks- loss of farming as a basic skill, the disappearance of the rural
community and way of life
