What sounds are in the language, and what sounds are not. Sounds that can start a word, end a word or follow each other. Knowledge that certain sound sequences signify certain concepts or meanings. For the most part, the relationship b/n sounds and meanings are arbitrary. Human languages permit their speakers to form indefinitely long sentences and infinitely many different sentences. Linguistic performance: how you use linguistic knowledge in actual speech production and comprehension. A dialect"s status is the consequence of the political, social or economic power of it speakers, not the linguistic merit of the dialect. Assumes that the student already knows one language and compares the grammar of the target language with the grammar of the native language. Explicitly state the rules of the language, listing the words and their pronunciations. Gloss: the parallel word in the student"s native language. The gloss of maison in english is house. Helps people found out the grammatical facts of a language.
