Morphology: The Words of Language • Word = a sound and a meaning • Homophones: different words with the same sounds, but different meanings (syn- onym = vice versa) All dictionaries provide: spelling, pronunciation, definition(s), and parts of speech • (noun, etc) Content words and function words • Content words (aka open words): are nouns, verbs, adjs, and adverbs • Functional words (aka closed words): are used for grammatical function; preposi- tions, conjunctions, determiners and pronouns Morphemes: the minimal units of meaning • Negative meaning of english words always starts with the -ve morpheme (not ever a suffix) • Morphology: way WORDS are formed Morphemes: a grammatical unit that cannot be further analyzed into more meanings • • Discreteness: decomposition of word
