A function f is a rule that assigns to each element x in a set d exactly one element, called f(x), in a set e. Set d is called domain of function; range of f is set of all possible values of f(x) Domain of function is called independent variable; range of function is called dependant variable. If f is a function w/domain d, then graph is the set of ordered pairs. Graph shows behaviour or history of function. Ex4: when you turn on water faucet, the temp (t) if water depends on how long water is running. Draw graph of t as a function of the time(t) that has elapsed since faucet was turned on . Vertical line test: curve in xy-plane is function of x only if no vertical line intersects the curve more than once.
