As children develop their practical thinking, they begin to explore what a straight line is. They begin to see that a straight line doesn"t have any curves, ability to bend, notice the rigid marks on the object and they begin to associate it with other things. They are able to make that differentiation of what would be considered a straight line and what is not at a young age. One of the ways that a five year old can define straight line is using objects such as ladders, tracks, streets or sidewalks. The point of view from a child at a young age is as if something is going in the motion that they feel isn"t turning or is going upward in the same motion. In high school the definition in geometry for a straight line was a straight line is the shortest distance between two points.
