Once people started showing symptoms, there was nothing they could do (there is no systematic cure) Tried to figure out what the scientific principles are to make a vaccine in the lab. In 1885, louis pasteur developed the first attenuated vaccine against rabies virus. Attenuation was achieved by creating a virus strain that was less virulent for humans. Since dogs had the virus too, the vaccine was tested on animals prior to humans. Aggressive disease: incubation period can last up to 18 months. Modern era of the vaccine (when vaccine was created: dtp vaccine prevents the following 3 diseases: 1960"s: mumps, measles and rubella virus (mmr vaccine) Diphtheria: bacterial disease that affects the membranes of the nose and throat, if left untreated, it can cause damage to kidneys, nervous system and heart, spread by person-to-person contact or contact with items that have bacteria. Pertussis: highly contagious respiratory disease caused by bacteria, mostly affects young children, and can be fatal.
