Cells are the basic unit of life of the living things. Early 19th century: very little information was known by scientists about cells because as they were not very well documented. Early 20th century: we had very limited understanding of genetic diseases and cancer but we all knew about the cells as being very important to us, living things. Humans have 104 billion cells in their bodies. Cells work together in order to help the organisms grow and survive. Unicellular: made up of only one cells, such as bacteria and yeast. Characteristics of cells: presence of a cell membrane which seperates the outside of the cell from the inside. Viruses are smaller than bacteria and both are smaller than body cells. Known for his work on the improvement of microscope and his contributions towards the establishment of microbiology: 1664-1665: robert hooke published micrographia, a book describing observations made with microscope and telescopes.
