Thesis: rights and freedoms are necessary for democracy to work because they outline and encourage individuals to exercise them. The exercise of empowering individuals promotes rights and freedoms as well as promotes society to elect a government that can give a good perspective of rights and freedoms. Democracy without any rights & freedoms cannot be considered full democracy. Objective: benefit the greatest number of people. Democracy is a state that practices people electing a government to represent the people (ethics, values, interests) Freedoms of expressions, peaceful assembly/association are some examples vital to democracy. Certain structures and mechanisms are put in place for individuals to exercise their right; I. e. right to vote; by electing government of their choice, empowerment and burden is put on the individual to exercise the freedom or right. Rights and freedoms relates to democracy through rule of law [magna carta] (prevent abuse of power)
