Define the concept, explain its significance to the idea of public law. The magna carta is a set of rights, a great charter , which imposed on the king john of. It proclaimed certain types of liberties, such as what rights a freeman (someone who owns land and is not a slave) had. An example would be the right to a fair trial. This charter also argued that the king could no longer have. Arbitrary power, which means that the king could no longer claim that his voice is law and that he did not need to justify himself. With the magna carta, it limited the king"s power and allowed the great barons of the land to meet in a committee and overrule the will of the king. This was the beginning of parliament and it created the system of the rule of law, which states that no one is exempted under the law, not even the king himself.
