Document Summary

A place in fiji was chosen where in 1995 television was just being introduced. They thought that in 3 years time there would be noticeable differences in eating behaviours. Another reason why the study was carried out was because there had been no prior studies on the influence of media and that it would be a good time to study the effects of television on eating disorders. The experiments explained that eating disorders were less common in developing societies than in industrialized nations. They suggested that since cultural differences influence healthy eating habits then culture in society might also be a cause" of eating disorders. This is because in most societies the culture isn"t that different in terms of media (they all have exposure to western images) hence its only one of the variables. At the time in fiji the women being studied where media naive" & eating disorders were rare.
