Document Summary

Tabula rasa: blank slate ( the newborns mind, it is empty of innate abilities, interests and ideas) All knowledge comes to the child through experience and learning but they originally start fresh. Children are born with knowledge and ideas that unfold naturally with age. Nativism: inborn processes guide the emergence of behaviours in a predictable manner. Cultural relativism: the belief that each culture should be examined and evaluated on its own terms. These shared beliefs/ views are what shape the development of an individual. Natural selection: an evolutionary process proposed by darwin in which characteristics of an individual that increase its chances of survival are more likely to be passed along to future generations. Recapitulation: an early biological notion that the development of the individual repeats the development of the species. Child and environment influence eachother in a transactional manner ( which means they reciprocate influence upon eachother) Ex: playground, school, the family, the church etc.
