Employment Discrimination Sunday Dec 8 2013 What is discrimination Discrimination means to treat someone differently For whatever reasonThe Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination on Protected Grounds and in Protected Social Areas What are protected grounds Protected groundsProtected grounds include age color ancestry race citizenship ethnic origin place of origin creed disability family status marital status gender identity receipt of public assistance sex and sexual orientation It is interesting that the Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination on the above protected grounds when discrimination occurs each and every day on one or more of the protected grounds listed above What does a protected area mean Protected areas Accommodations renting a house leasing a houseContracts Ex who to do business with and who not to do business with EmploymentServices Ex restaurant hospital hotel Vocational associationsworkplace union who is allowed to join the union or notOnce again it is interesting that the Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination in the above protected areas when discrimination occurs each and every day in one or more of the protected areas listed above Workplace participation by gender Since the 1950s there has been a steady increase of women in the workforce As a result there has been a slight decrease of men in the workforce Why is this Before if an employer needed 100 people for the job all 100 would be men Now the employer still needs 100 people for the job but by law the employer needs to be equally likely to hire women as men Therefore the employer hired 20 women Altogether the employer has 80 men and 20 women The 20 women replaced 20 men who would have got the job based on the old practices of the company Female tomale earnings ratios full time workers annualThere is a large gap in fulltime female workers annual income in comparison to fulltime male workers annual income Female workers make between 6070 to what men make 100However the gap is narrowing as the trend shows an increase in fulltime female workers annual income year after yearIncome gap weekly earnings in the US 2012 This graph is based on weekly earnings in the US a study conducted in 2012 This graph compared weekly earnings in the US of people who identify as white Africa American Asian and Latino this graph also looked at males and females within each race category Results Overall within each race category men had a greater weekly earning than females Surprisingly Asian men had the greatest weekly earning than white men and both African American men and Latino men earned about the same In terms of women Asian women had the greatest weekly earnings then white women and African American women and Latino women earned roughly the same Income gap median weekly earnings in the US 2012 This graph compared median weekly earnings among people with a doctoral degree professional degree master degree bachelors degree 2year degree and a high school diploma This graph compared median weekly earnings of males and females with the above credentials Results Among all types of degrees females had a lower median weekly earning than men
