Modes of Psychotherapy – 4 dimensions
1. Cognition
a. Learning directly by experience and indirectly by symbols
b. You are influenced by what people tell you and what you see
c. We can transcend time. We have an imagination
d. What are you attitudes and beliefs
e. They can be explicit or implicit
2. Behaviour
a. Learning through action
b. E.g., exercise, in vivo (actually doing it) learning, role playing, homework
c. Not the choices you make, how you act them out
3. Affect
a. Emotions or feelings
b. Direct views – emotions as epiphenomena, emotions as powerful agents leading
to change, and emotions as evidence of change
4. Physiology
a. Neurological, somatic, or organic causes of behaviour
b. Psychologists are not very interested in this, but they still have to take
assessments if there are physiology reasons that are influencing behaviours. E.g.,
low insulin causes people to feel dizzy and act drunk
Mechanisms of Psychotherapy
• Cognitive Factors
o Universalization
▪ People might think they are the only one going through this
▪ When they find out they are not the only one, they feel better
