The relative gap - measured gdp/pc of the poor or middle-income groups as a percentage of that of the high-income countries. Nearly impossible to narrow the absolute gap - narrowing the relative gap, however, is attainable - more accessible development goal. Hdi - composite index of the standard of living in a country - measured by three different aspects of human development: health (life expectancy), knowledge (literacy, school enrolment), and wealth (gdo) As countries grow richer, standard of living improves. Hdi scores suggest that improvement in the relative gap that countries have achieved has also meant improvement in the standard of living. Morawetz - goals for development policies - consider closing the relative gap - though not easy, is possible - same cannot be said for absolute gap. Three explanations for the origins of the gap between countries: 2) expansion of and participation in international trade. 3) establishment of effective government and the respect of private property.
