SOCI 2030 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Tooth Fairy, How Do You Know, The Heartland Institute
Document Summary
A lot of psychological research said what you do know is not what you really know. Research processes all have the same dynamic: eg. Is the world knowable: vs. inexplicable phenomena. Do casual or entangled relationships exist: vs. contiguous or random events in time. Can existing knowledge be used to extrapolate future events: vs. committing the inductive fallacy (what was the same, will always be so in the future) Empiricism: reality (all knowledge) is experienced through the senses, or from sensory experience. Media myths: television shows, movies, and newspaper and magazine articles are important sources of information, eg. You pick up a report from someone who attends. Mcgill or u of t and assume that the author is smart and talented and that the report will be excellent. You do not make this assumption about a report by someone from an unknown university or college.
