Individual autonomy refers to the idea of one"s own person and social structure refers to ties between an individual and a social network. Dorothy lee is an anthropologist who uses a comparative approach to understanding culture in order to find alternative approaches or resolutions to conflicts that we experience in western society. Autonomy and social structure lee addresses the conflict between the two ideas and how they can be overcome with respect. Furthermore, through her work she looks at a number of cultural practices related to the general themes of language, child rearing, leadership, and work. My objective in this essay is to assert how the concepts individual autonomy and social structure can coexist with the notion of respect. In addition to that i will be analyzing an example provided by dorothy lee, which relates to these ideas along with the theme child rearing.
