The envy that a girl subconsciously feels towards her father because she doesn"t have a penis and he does. The girl is angry towards the mother for this and identifies with the father. She must transform wish for penis into wish for a baby son who will fill that lacking of penis envy (freud). Or- envy of the promise of patriarchal power and privilege and power in male dominated society. The result of this penis envy and her oedipus complex is normalized/dominant femininity and, finally, her fully feminine wish to have a substitute for a penis: a child boy of her own. While girls have penis envy boys have castration anxiety (boys see their mother without a penis and are scared to lose their penis so they identify with the father. ) It is important because it helps display how a girl becomes a woman.
