In her article, backhouse provides an account of efforts to apply oppressive racialized social controls using the canadian legal system. Using the examples of the white women"s labour law and the yee clun case, discuss how and to what extent the legal system supported racialization. In 1924, the city of regina voted to deny yee clun a license that would allow him to hire white female waitresses to work in his restaurant. Voted was solely based on the fact that yee clun was identified as a chinese-canadian: 1912 enactment of saskatchewan statute a. k. a. white women"s labour law: prohibited white women to be hired or employed by asian-canadian males. Yee clun was not legally allowed to hire white women to work in his restaurant due to the white women"s labour law , which meant that they would have to hire coloured- women.
