People have experienced a form of trauma. Because people they have the ability to. People truly believe the assets they have acquired they have acquired through being selfish will bring and has brought them happiness. To relate this back to the course, one can say people are selfish for several reasons. Because they have experienced some form of trauma causing them to use apathetic and narcissistic behaviour as a guard to protect themselves from being in the state again. Because they have the ability to do so; economically, status. Because they truly believe the assets and material items they have obtained have and will continue to bring them happiness. Since a concern with one"s own interests is a character trait that, when translated into action, enables one to achieve and guard one"s own well-being, it follows that selfishness is a virtue.
