Genius is someone with supernatural ability, concept of genius emerged in the renaissance. First modern genius was spawned by humanist ideals. Artists do not work in isolation, are all products of our environment. Art is ideological, what you see in art is what you know or believe to be true. Institutions influence an artist to follow a particular path, can by the same token bar certain people from becoming an artist (women, for example). In 1885, the first woman graduated from u of t. 1906, first female professors within the university setting. 1972- a woman was allowed into a male only facility. Genie was a feral child, only discovered because her mother took her to social services.
