We"ve been looking a lot at the industrial revolution and the turbulence that it brought in and introduced into our daily lives and how it influenced design and industrialized cultures. People like john ruskin and william morris were very critical of the dishonesty of the designs that were coming out of the industrial revolution, the inauthenticity, the dehumanizing effects it was having on people. Eg. paper mache and cast iron instead of wood and iron. This allowed for the lavish decoration of products to cover of cheap design and mistakes . England had previously been the breadbasket of industrialization (19th c) Women before were not able to leave home without a dude or another woman. Removed social stigma of woman being alone in public as problematic. Constructed as a female pursuit to shop when they initially couldn"t get out without being chaperoned. Needed women to be employed to keep stores open. Gave women mobility and jobs in department stores.
