Document Summary

The reality of groups: definitions of groups, the individual group relationship, the interpersonal-group continuum. Two main reasons why we should study groups (1) scientific: people grow, play, make decisions, and fight in groups. If you ignore groups, scientifically you cannot understand why people act the way the do. But recently it is not self-esteem but now acceptance, because this allows you to belong. When you are accepted your self-esteem is high etc. when you are not accepted your self-esteem plummets, drop in iq, more prone to lose control of yourself, also there are links between physical pain and rejection. Therefore psychological pain and physical pain is linked and research shows that pain killers have helped to dull the pain. Therefore belonging is very important to us as human beings, this is shown through evolution (2) political: many social problems involve groups, control of environmental pollution, protection of children, racism, international conflict and the alleviation of poverty.
