Paintings based on poems, poems based on paintings and musical works based on either. Virtuoso performers (used every single note) were idolized like movie stars. Strophic: every verse has the same music (like hymn) Modified strophic- some verses have the same music; others are changed to reflect the words. (ex. Through-composed- e(cid:448)er(cid:455) (cid:448)erse has differe(cid:374)t (cid:373)usi(cid:272) (cid:894)e(cid:454). Wrote over 600 lieder, 9 symphonies, chamber music, piano sonatas, choral. Schubertiads: home gatherings of schubert and his friends. They would play social games, sing songs and talk. Schubert read the poem and quickly wrote a lied. Characters: narrator, father, son, erlking, sung by one person. Very introverted- did not appear in public halls only private salons. Established a new romantic piano style that included rubato (stealing time-losing time then picking up time)
