Document Summary

Several processes other than natural selection can function to. Mutation can be cause by errors in replication transcription, cell division, or by external agents. Mutations may be beneficial, neutral, or harmful the effect of a mutation depends on the environment harmful mutations are removed by natural selections. Pertaining to ecological fitness, it is usual to speak of mutations as either harmful or beneficial. Harmful/deleterious - mutation decreases the fitness of the organism. Beneficial/advantageous - mutation increases the fitness of the organism. Mutations that promotes traits that are desirable, are also called beneficial. Neutral - mutation has no harmful or beneficial effect on the organism. Such mutations occur at a steady rate, forming the basis for the molecular clock. In the neutral theory of molecular evolution, neutral mutations provide genetic drift as the basis for most variation at the molecular level.
