Class Notes #1 09/18/2013
*Environmental geosciences: study of interaction between humans and their environments
Human groups: looking at various ways humans interact with the environment
Scientific study of how humans interact with the earth
Seeks to understand
Nature of internal and surface landscape processes
Distribution and use of natural resources
Disposal of waste products by societies
Examine impact of humans on various environments
*Land use: management and modification of natural environment that human population make to the surface of the
earth. Land use includes all changes made through agriculture, urbanization, waste disposal, raw material acquisition
and other human activities. Changes observed over short and long term cycles and are influences by cultural and
societal norms or values. Class Notes #2 09/18/2013
Surface of earth= top 15km
Land use planning:
Purpose: safety, economic planning, conservation of resources, pollution control
Management: what the use is? Consumption rate?
Multiple use vs Sequential use
Multiple use, can a piece of land have more than one piece?
Sequential use, one after the other
As the global population increases, the rate of development on landscape increases as well. Land use planning must
occur to ensure sustainability of humans.
How does the population grow?
Population grows when birth rate exceeds death rate
Improvements in health, sanitation and nutrition’s
Exponential vs linear growth
Doubling time is 50 years at current 1.2% global growth rate
Growth rate for individual countries may vary widely
Humans adapt to new environments
Population now live in what we once considered uninhabitable landscapes
What do so many people do the environment? Class Notes #3
