Geologic time: span of time since earth"s formation. Geologic time scale: divides history of earth into different units. 87% of geologic time there was no visible life. Paradigm: theory that explains larger number of aspects in the natural world. Theories that withstand examination or totally unexpected occurrences. Origin of the earth: most researchers believe earth and other planets formed at the same time. Nebular theory: solar system evolved from really large cloud or nebula which was made of hydrogen and helium. Accretionary disk: diffused material spinning about what would become a star. Solar system starts as dust and gasses (nebula) and then starts to gravitationally collapse. Nebula contracts into a flattened rotating disk that is heated by gravitational energy turning into thermal energy. As it formed the decay of radioactive elements and heat from high velocity impacts increase temp. Iron and nick melt and sink to center. Gaseous material escapes earth"s interior to produce the primitive atmosphere.
