Mongol Expansion (1206-1294)

Siege of Caffa (1345-1346)
● Caffa was walled off to protect inhabitants from the black death. Mongols flung the dead
over the walls and introduced the black death
● Black death spread like crazy, and people were scared. Blamed travelers/traders and
travel ordinances were placed. This was troubling for the mongols because it weakened
mongol institutions and other holds.
Protestant reformation – 1517
● Martin Luther’s 95 theses nailed to church door - faith alone causes salvation
● Protested the opulence, corruption, and misguided principles of the church (particularly
the indulgences)
