emancipation, which eventually was enough to cause the Emancipation Proclamation.

Sharecropping was after Civil War end slaveowners had all the tools. Northern migration
was not an option. So slaves had a portion of land and had to give 1/3 of profits annually
to master. This led to so much debt that it was little better then slavery.
