Sublimination: Higher Cultural Purpose
Socially appropriate argument
The Two Forces: Eros % Thanatos
Besides he instinct to preserve living substance and to join it into even larger units there must be another
inorganic state. That is to say as well as Eros there was an instinct of death. The phenomena of life could
be explained from the concurrent or mutually opposing action of these two instincts.
(erotic) Sadism and (Erotic) Masochism seems to prima facie evidence of these two drives especially being
their “alloyed” together
Yet this aggressiveness can also be “nonerotic aggressively and destructiveness and can have failed to
give it is due place in our interpretation of life (the desire for destruction it is directed inwards mostly elides
our perception of course unless it is tinged with eroticism)
The devil is discussed on page 108 as Gods scapegoat the object of his displaced aggression just as the
Jews were the scapegoats of the Aryans the object of their displacement and aggression
Literary Example: Proctor and Abigail (The Crucible)
The Civilized Human Condition: Discontentment
Proctor is pulled between the Supper Ego and the ID: “The Ego” the battleground between ID and Super
The Dire Conclusion
Constant struggle, Battle of the Giants that the nursemaids try to appease with lullabies of heaven. We
constantly mess up because we have no control over them. Fides et Ratio
John Paul II’s topic: “the theme of truth itself and on its foundation in relation to faith”
But in response to what?
20 Centaury Relativism – the view that there is no truth: what’s true for me is truth for me what’s true for
you is true for you there is a breakdown of both reason and faith.
But how is this relativism to be engaged?
Answer: by appealing to the wonder and “desire to know” of each human being – we are oriented toward
the truth of things
Elf Transcendence: we transcend ourselves by seeking the truth of things
“The forgetfulness of Being”
why are you here, what are you supposed to be doing, where are you going? “The forgetfulness that has
taken hold and permeated not only the humanities but the natural sciences as well is the “forgetfulness of
the transcendence and transcendent destiny of human persons”
It is unthinkable that a search so deeply rooted in human nature should be completely vain and useless
Human beings would not even begin to search for something of which they know nothing or for something,
which they thought, was wholly beyond them. Only the sense that they can arrive at an answer leads them
to take this final step.
You cant inquire about X if you know absolutely nothing about X
Selftranscendence against cultural relativism
It is undeniable that this time of rapid and complex change can leave especially on the younger generation
to whom the future belongs and on whom it depends, with a sense that they have no valid points of
reference… This is why many people stumble through life to the very edge of the abyss without knowing
where they are going.
Truth can also drown in a welter of other concerns people can even run from the truth as soon as they
glimpse it because they are afraid of its demands.
On the encounter with Culture
There is a modern tendency to swaty away from claiming to have “access to the truth” especially in the fave
of other cultural practices
But the church should not shy away from encountering other cultures. This has always been its charge
since Paul engaged the philosophers in Athens.
In order to pass on the truths which he had revealed, led the Christian community
A Final Appeal to Theologians
That they “pay special attention to the philosophical implications of the word of God” “The intimate bon bt theological and philosophical wisdom is one of the Christian Traditions most distinctive
treasures in the exploration of revealed truth
the grave responsibility to provide for appropriate training of those charged with teaching philosophy both in
seminaries and ecclesiastical faculties must not be neglected.
A Final Appeal to Philosophers
“To courage to recover in the flow of enduringly valid philosophical tradition the range of authentic wisdom
and truth metaphysical truth included which is proper to philosophical inquiry.
