This is the life of pigs : city gets sick when desire exceeds necessity (when people want more than they need) This can be avoided by putting philosophers in charge: socrates wants to keep city simple so that the city doesn"t get sick, or so that desire doesn"t exceed necessity, the city/soul analogy. Rational part: the mind, aims at wisdom, intellect. Spirited part: aims at courage, acts on what the intellect deems best.
