Document Summary

All we have access to is motion of objects" images on the retina. What we are interested in is the movement of images on the retina as a result of the objects moving. We are also interested in how the image of the objects moves relative to our eyes, as our eyes move all the time! The problem is that our eyes are constantly moving! These are quick and you have no control over them (hence why they are ballistic). Once they start, there is no way to stop them! For instance, think about when you hear a noise somewhere off to your left. Once your eyes dart to the left, you can not stop them until they reach their goal or predetermined location. In other words, these are very fast jumps from one location to another. Smooth pursuit: exactly what it sounds like!
