Discourse: socially acceptable use of language to identify oneself as a member of a social network. Control over certain discourses can lead to acquisition of social goods (i. e. referred to as dominant discourses and groups with fewest conflicts when using it is the dominant group ). Often these discourses empower those w/ fewest conflicts w/ other discourse when using them. Individuals don"t speak and act rather they give body to a historically and socially defined discourse. Acquisition: subconscious trial and error process w/in natural settings in which one needs to acquire in order to function i. e. learning first language. Learning: conscious knowledge gained through explanation and analysis, inherently involves attaining some degree of meta-knowledge regarding the subject. Acquirers beat learners @ performance while learnings beat acquirers @ talking about it, explication, explanation, analysis, criticism, etc. Reading is at the very least the ability to interpret pring on a set of symbols, viewpoints embedded in discourse, etc.
