Ny times: put globalization to work for democracy. Economies with richer counterparts have engaged globally in selective, strategic manners. Other countries that have relied on globalization but have to do so domestically strategically have become disillusioned. Solution: reassess and find a balance between national autonomy and economic globalization. Hyperglobalization is pushing economic globalization too far and we have transitioned into this state through two major events: Organization for economic cooperation and development"s decision in 1989 to remove restrictions on cross-border financial flows. 1995 establishment of wto with implications for domestic health and safety rules, subsidies, and industrial policies. Results in democracy working for globalization rather than the other way around such as when we choose to end barriers to trade and finance. Key distinguishing features of the history of globalization: In the post-cold war discourse globalization has been perceived to be fundamental and irreversible and negative dynamic.
