Joule and watt: a tale of two jameses. The story of james watt is the story of how global warming began. Why did the industrial revolution take place in the 1600s in britain: the scientific revolution and the age of enlightenment, the abundance of coal, james watt. Watt figured out how to make steam engines much more efficient. The newcomen engine (invented in 1712) heats and cools a single piston with each cycle. 50 years later, in 1763, james watt was given the task of fixing a model of a newcomen steam engine while working at the university of glasgow. He figured out that he could condense the steam in a separate cold chamber, dramatically increasing the efficiency. The story of james joule is the story of the discovery of conservation of energy. Joule figured out how mechanical work gets converted to heat, conserving energy. 1 joule = the energy required to lift 1kg (a macbook air) 10cm.
