Near doubling of lifespan had to do with vaccination, antibiotics, nutrition and antisepsis. Absolutely stunning rise in age-related diseases (cardiovascular, intestinal and neurological) There appears to be a programme to aging: not a stochastic descent into chaos. Unclear how a clock could have evolved, since that natural lifespan exceeds the lifespan of most species in the wild (most mice are eaten by predators by 1, but in lab die at 4) If there"s a programme we should be able to mess with it. Hayflick limit: number of times a cell can divide. Only non-genetic intervention which extends lifespan in species. But there is data that shows otherwise too! Looking at identical twins is perfect, because everything different is environmental. Dizygotic twins share only half their dna differences are environmental and genetic! Looked at scatter graphs to show that 25% of human lifespan is due to genes.
