Changing balance of power between emperor and bureaucracy. 3 social system with extended family at the core. Rule of law > rule of man. Religion reinforced state rather than civil society. Contempt for merchants inhibited growth of business and middle class. Geographical shape of china depended on the strength of the dynasty (qing ming . Opium wars (settled in treaty of nanjing) Due in part to import of food and healthcare. They tried hard to reconcile falling chinese system & state with confucian ideology. Partial acceptance of western-thinking: keep our culture, but adopt western technology for defense . Attempted to find western values in confucianism.
