Document Summary

In contemporary western cultures, epidemiological studies use a biomedical approach to disease. The syndemic approach considers interactions between two or more diseases or health conditions as they occur within a wider social, economic, and political context. Epidemiological studies focus especially on interactions among the host, the agent, and the environment. Epidemiological studies consider the biology and the behavior of both humans and any pathogens that cause the disease, as well as the characteristics of nonliving agents and environmental factors that may influence the development and manifestations of the disease. Host = human and agent = pathogen. Use an emic approach in studies to describe the characteristics and behaviors being studied in terms that fit within the world view of the people being studied. Cholera is a water and food-borne diarrheal illness caused by a toxin released by a bacterium. Contagion is transmission of infection by direct contact between individuals, droplet spread, or contact with inanimate objects.
